The “Gift vs. Tax” Metaphor

This metaphor helps clients distinguish between values-based giving (a gift) and rule-governed, demand-driven behavior (a tax). It’s often used when someone feels pressured or resentful in relationships, especially when their acts of care have shifted from choice to obligation.
