Have you ever pulled into the driveway after your drive home, and suddenly realized you cannot remember a single mile of it? Your hands worked the wheel, your feet found the pedals, you stopped at every light, and yet you weren't really there for any of it. You performed hundreds of small actions while your attention drifted off somewhere else.
Most days happen exactly like that, and there’s a good reason for it. You'd be worn out if every ordinary action demanded your full attention. But being on autopilot all the time does not come without costs. Because what keeps people stuck is rarely a big decision, but small, unquestioned habits that run on their own. Consider the phone you unlock for no reason, the fridge you open without being hungry, the worry you pick back up the moment you wake, the "I'm fine" you say without a thought. We follow those patterns whether or not they still serve us, and it rarely occurs to us that we could do otherwise.
Today's exercise is a small way to give you back that choice. It takes one ordinary thing you already do without thinking and, with a single change, shows you something about your own attention that you usually move too fast to catch.
It takes about a minute, so please click below to watch today's exercise "Do It Slowly.”
